Sutherland Felts origins trace back to 1902, when Frank L. Sutherland founded Sutherland Leather & Felt Company. The business began by supplying leather and felt components to the horse and buggy industry. As the automotive era took off in the early 1900s, Sutherland partnered with Detroit-based manufacturers and suppliers, producing leather belts, gaskets, and washers.
As customer needs evolved, so did Sutherland. The company expanded into industrial sewing, crafting products such as machine bellows, saddles, and felt storage bins. Its commitment to quality and precision workmanship fueled steady growth and diversification.

In 2014, Sutherland Felt Company significantly enhanced its sewing capabilities by acquiring Fiber Trim Sewing Company, a well-established sewing contractor with over 30 years of industry expertise. This acquisition tripled the size of Sutherland’s sewing division and introduced advanced technology to its operations.
Today, Sutherland Sewing stands as one of North America’s leading industrial sewing suppliers, recognized for its innovation, craftsmanship, and customer-driven approach.
From humble beginnings, Sutherland Sewing and Sutherland Felt Company have expanded into an 88,000-square-foot facility in Madison Heights, Michigan, which stands as a testament to over a century of unwavering dedication and continuous growth.
We look forward to the opportunity to welcome you into the
Sutherland legacy.
